HOPE

Power does not reside in institutions, not even the state or large corporations. It is located in the networks that structure society ( Manuel Castells, 2012)

Direct Provision Ireland 2018

On 4th December students and staff from Carlow College take part in a seminar on the subject of ‘shelter’ with particular reference to Direct Provision,. Three residents from a Direct Provision Centre in Monaghan spoke of the social isolation that results from Direct Provision.

Direct provision has existed in Ireland since 1999. It involves the internment of asylum seekers in centres, often in remote locations, which are managed by for profit companies under the supervision of the Reception and Integration agency(RIA), an arm of the Department of Justice and Equality. This daylong event will platform voices with experience of Ireland’s Direct Provision System and is coordinated in collaboration with Asylum Archive. This event responds to the crisis that is Direct Provision in Ireland and is run in connection with a season of exhibitions at VISUAL which explore the theme of "shelter."

The High Hope Choir

Moving story behind the High Hopes Choir

The Drogheda Independent (2014) reports that the High Hopes Choir, is Ireland's first choir for homeless people set up by David Brophy former conductor of the RTE Concert Orchestra.

An amazing and uplifting project, it was first aired shortly after the tragic death of Jonathan Corrie, a homeless man who appeared briefly in the first episode. The idea behind it is to give these people a voice and to help them change the public's perception of what it means to be homeless.

Dean’s Story

Dean is 21. He has been accessing homeless services since December 2017 and has been in and out of homelessness since the age of 16. He is currently residing in one of our services in Dublin’s southside.

He wishes to challenge the stereotypical views people have on homelessness and the different routes to becoming homeless in his poem “Paint Me”.
