National Homelessness and Housing Coalition Demonstration

Updated: Dec 6, 2018

Some members of our team took part in a recent march on the 1st December 2018 in Dublin City Centre to highlight the country’s housing crisis. Many thousands of people attended from all over the country to demonstrate the need to address this current crisis. This demonstration included union representatives, community groups and political parties. We arrived early to the event in order to meet some of the event organisers and to ask them some question regarding how the housing crisis was affecting them. It was great to meet them and hear their stories.

We then documented the march by taking video and we met up with other students from colleges all over which we had known from previous events. There was a great sense of togetherness and common purpose.

Traffic was disrupted from the Garden of Remembrance on Parnell Square, along the quays to Dame Street where the march ended. This particular march was held to mark the anniversary of Jonathan Corrie’s death. He died on the 1st December 2014 in a doorway, just feet from Dail Eireann. Jonathan’s passing was very much in the minds of every one in attendance. His death had sparked a nationwide fight back approach however; homelessness has trebled since his passing.

The march ended in a rally at Dame Street where Tina McVeigh gave a stirring speech challenging the governments lack of action in response to the crisis.
